Blood Cold Chain

Chances are, you or someone you know, has needed a blood transfusion to improve their health or even save their life. To call attention to the global need for a safe and appropriate blood supply, June 14, 2017 has been designated World Blood Donor Day.

World Health Organization

According to the World Health Organization, 112.5 million blood donations are collected worldwide, and unpaid blood donations account for 100% of the blood supply in 57 different countries. Ref. The Blood Cold Chain

From the point of donation or collection to administration to a patient, blood enters a system of storage and transportation known as the blood cold chain. Maintaining the correct temperature is necessary to ensure blood products are safe. Any break in that chain that leads to exposure outside acceptable temperature ranges can result in blood’s ability to transport oxygen or carbon dioxide to and from tissues or bacterial contamination. Blood cold chain failure is a result of logistical issues, transportation equipment failure, or other transport difficulties. The World Health Organization’s “Manual on the Management, Maintenance and Use of Blood Cold Chain Equipment”, points out the potentially fatal results that can occur if any part of the blood cold chain is compromised.

Temperature-Sensitive Packaging Solutions

A major cause of unsafe blood transfusions is the inability to maintain the correct temperature when in transit from one blood bank to another. To ensure storage and transport and the proper temperature, use of transport boxes that meet minimum performance specifications is required.

CSafe Global temperature-sensitive packaging solutions, designed for hand delivery, are simple to use and are compatible with standard refrigerator and freezer storage units. AcuTemp couriers are designed to maintain temperature during the final steps of the blood cold chain. Available in 3, 6 and 12 liter sizes, they have a variety of optional mobility enhancements including handles, padded shoulder straps and belt system for cart attachment. Customizable solutions are available at 2-8°C, 2-25°C and -20°C. The VaxiPac PX1L is a rugged, reliable and reusable insulated carrying case that eliminates the need for wet or dry ice packs. The PX1L is available in solutions with hold times up to 22 hours at different temperature ranges when using interchangeable PXC coolant packs.
