CSafe company history

In 1979, the company—then called Energy Storage Technologies—was founded in southwest Ohio by a father and son missionary team. While abroad in underdeveloped countries, they witnessed death and suffering due to the spoilage of life-saving biologics, vaccines, and medicines—spoilage caused by poor temperature management during transit. After returning to the United States, they were determined to address the need for improved cold chain packaging and began developing and manufacturing high-performance (VIP) insulation to ensure that patients around the world would have access to thermally stable, life-enhancing pharmaceuticals.

In 2005, after years of growth and success, the company acquired AcuTemp Thermal Solutions, later merging with CSafe LLC in 2012 to form CSafe Global. In 2016, CSafe Global acquired Kalibox, continuing to broaden its commercial footprint in Europe and expand its portfolio of cold chain packaging solutions.

Today, CSafe Global is the only full-line provider of both active and passive cold chain packaging solutions addressing the temperature management needs of pharmaceutical and life science companies around the globe.

CSafe management team

Patrick Schafer
Chief Executive Officer (interim) & Chief Financial Officer

Pat Schafer guides strategy development and execution, and is responsible for Finance, Treasury, Tax, Information Technology, Purchasing, and Human Resources.

Mr. Schafer has held senior-level positions in both the United States and Europe, most recently as Vice President of Finance for Clopay Plastic Products, a leader in hygienic films. Prior to that, Mr. Schafer lived in Dusseldorf, Germany, and was the Director of Global Finance for the Henkel Chemicals (Cognis) Group. He began his career in public accounting with Coopers and Lybrand.

Pat Schafer has a B.S. degree from Miami University and an M.B.A. from Duke University.

Seth Hertel
Chief Commercial Officer

Seth Hertel guides the sales team in sales automation, process optimization, planning and analysis, and creating programs to drive closer partnerships with our key customers.

Mr. Hertel joins CSafe with deep international management experience, having lived and worked in China, the UK, Singapore, and South Korea. He has over 22 years of experience in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry in key leadership and management roles. Mr. Hertel’s professional background includes leadership roles at Sigma-Aldrich Corporation (Merck KGaA), Barnstead/Thermolyne (ThermoFisher Scientific), Covance (LabCorp) and Roquette.

Seth Hertel has a B.A. in Political Science and Portuguese from the University of Wisconsin – Madison. He continued at UW-Madison and received his M.A. in Portuguese. He completed the dual E.M.B.A. program at Columbia University of NY and the London Business School.

Thomas Weir
Vice President, Global Operations

Tom Weir leads CSafe’s engineering, service, supply chain, manufacturing, and quality teams.

Mr. Weir brings more than 15 years of executive experience leading global engineering and operations teams. He has developed extensive expertise leading teams in Europe, Ukraine, Mexico, and Asia. His industry expertise includes aviation, cold chain logistics, payment systems, and clinical trial technology. Throughout his career, Mr. Weir has successfully led transformational strategic initiatives in operations, new product development, manufacturing, and service. His professional background includes technical leadership roles at Boeing, United Technologies (Sensitech division), and Crane Payment Systems (formally MEI).

Tom Weir holds a B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from Kansas University and an M.B.A. from Rockhurst University. He also completed executive leadership training at the Wharton School of Business, University of Pennsylvania.

Brad Jennings
Vice President, Global Marketing

Brad Jennings is responsible for marketing strategy, product management, and ensuring an optimal and effective network of airline and freight forwarder business partnerships.

Mr. Jennings has a unique professional background in which he spent 23 years in Europe, Asia, and Africa, with most of this time serving in senior-level marketing, commercial, and GM roles in the pharmaceuticals and biologics industry sectors. His life science and healthcare experience spans more than 20 years and has included key leadership and management roles with Novartis Vaccines, Novartis Pharma, Baxter Healthcare, and Baxalta.

Brad Jennings earned a B.A. degree in both Biology and Business Administration from Austin College and an International M.B.A. from the Thunderbird School of Global Management, where he had a dual concentration in International Marketing and Finance.
