Global Vaccine Rollout Gets a Huge Shipping Boost

When a pneumonia and meningitis immunization program needed to be rolled out worldwide, the safe transportation of vaccines was a crucial component in the process.

The global bio-pharmaceutical company leading this initiative required a totally reliable, cost-effective Temperature Control Packaging solution to support its drive – and one that was ideal for air transportation.

The award-winning Silverpod® range was tailor-made for just this kind of activity. Not only was the entire global distribution programme completed, but it was done so without any product excursions whatsoever.

The Opportunity

Shipping vaccines is a critical business that leaves no margin for error. The process is peppered with challenges which are compounded where great volumes and distances are concerned.

This pneumonia and meningitis immunization programme required vaccines to be maintained in their refrigeration temperature bracket of between +2°C and +8°C for the duration of their transit. Add to this the fact that these temperature-sensitive vaccines had to be distributed to hundreds of different destinations worldwide and the challenges multiplied.

The distances involved opened a time-temperature conundrum where medicines had to maintain their stated temperatures despite travelling from one tropic to another, with huge variations in external temperatures.

The company was looking for a robust, high performance, globally-available Temperature Control Pallet shipping system which could not only do the job, but would also minimize any unnecessary freight costs by maximizing transportation space. They also needed a partner that was familiar with handling the global nature of the assignment.

The Breakthrough

The Silverpod pallet shipper was the world’s first container created for aircraft unit load devices. Originally conceived as a Temperature Control Packaging system for express transportation by air, the Silverpod name has become top of mind in the global freight-forwarding sector. New technology has been part and parcel of the Silverpod range evolution, to the point where it now offers pharmaceutical clients incredible choice in superlative pallet in pallet shippers.

Where distribution of the pneumonia and meningitis vaccines were concerned, space needed to be maximized on an LD7 aircraft. With Silverpod LD7 Half and Quarter pallet-in-pallet shippers in its range, CSafe specially qualified them for the task at hand.

Having designed and worked with this system for more than 20 years, CSafe were able to offer performance guarantees despite the magnitude of the global programme. The Silverpod LD7 shippers were designed to surmount the problems inherent in continental transportation and guarantee minimal temperature excursions.

Furthermore, as a true global manufacturer and supplier with local customer service, CSafe would prove to be an ideal partner for such a program.

The Pay-Off

By selecting the Silverpod LD7 Half and Quarter pallet-inpallet shippers, this pharmaceutical client was utilizing a award-winning and patented, bulk-product shipping system that offered the safest possible air freight transportation for their temperature-sensitive cargo.

Sporting a new glide-fit for easy assembly, the technical insulation foam pack-out was engineered to maintain temperatures of +2° to +8°C, and perform conclusively for up to 120 hours. Also, by being designed to accept palletized freight, the shippers optimized the loading of consignments, providing maximum capacity in the aircraft.

Not only did this solution afford easy packing for distribution, it allowed vaccine shipments to reach all 140 countries in perfect condition. Without a single shipper compromised, rollout of the pneumonia and meningitis immunization program was seamless.

This level of reliability has prompted new product requirements on new shipping lanes which require enhanced levels of temperature control. CSafe is now qualifying higher-performing passive packaging systems to help reduce the financial outlay associated with more costly active systems.

“Having the capability to distribute hundreds of millions of vaccines to 140 countries across 5 continents, without any product spoilage, was a massive shot in the arm for this program.”
